Amaziah – The King of Judah Who Followed the Lord with a Half-Heart
Scripture Reading:
? 2 Kings 14:1–20
? 2 Chronicles 25:1–28
Amaziah became king at the age of twenty-five and reigned over Judah for twenty-nine years.
In his early days, he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a whole heart (2 Chronicles 25:2).
The Early Life of Amaziah
At the beginning,
He decided to walk according to the Word of God
He experienced a few victories
He obeyed God’s commandments
But in his later days,
He turned away from the ways of the LORD
He began to worship the gods of the people of Seir, whom he himself had defeated.
This became the starting point of his downfall
In the end, he was killed because of a conspiracy by his enemies.
The Commendable aspects of Amaziah’s Life.
1. Justice According to God’s Law
He put to death the officials who had murdered his father the king
? (2 Chronicles 25:3)
However, he did not put their children to death.
? “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each one shall die for their own sin.”
— The commandment of Moses (2 Chronicles 25:4)
? Thus, Amaziah obeyed God’s law of justice.
2. Obedience to the Word of God
To fight against the Edomites,
He hired 100,000 soldiers from Israel
Paying one hundred talents of silver
? (2 Chronicles 25:6)
But when the man of God warned him saying, “The LORD is not with Israel,” Amaziah,
Did not worry about the money he had paid
Obeyed the Word of the LORD
Sent the Israelite troops back
? He believed that the LORD was able to give him much more than what he had lost.
As a result, ? He won a great victory.
The Dark Side of Amaziah’s Life
After the victory,
He did not dedicate the victory to the LORD
Instead, he honored and worshiped the idols of the defeated people
? (2 Chronicles 25:14)
? This marked the beginning of his downfall.
Eventually,
Shame
Defeat
Conspiracy
Death
became the end of his life.
Lessons God Teaches Us Through the Life of Amaziah
1. Serve God with a Whole Heart
Whether it is ministry or work, ? everything must be done to fully please the LORD.
? We must never serve God with a half-hearted commitment.
2. Do Not Associate with Those Who Oppose God
We should not maintain close relationships or alliances with those who are not at peace with God or who stand against Him.
Even if it causes loss, ? we must willingly accept it.
? “The LORD is able to give you much more than this”
— 2 Chronicles 25:9
3. God’s Support Is Greater Than Human Support
The support God gives is far greater than the help offered by people who oppose Him.
? “God has power to help and to overthrow.”
— 2 Chronicles 25:8
4. Give Glory to God for Every Victory
If we offer our victories
to idols
to people
or to ourselves
instead of glorifying God,
? the same victories can become the cause of our downfall.
Concluding Message
? We are called to follow God with a whole heart.
Half-hearted devotion always leads to spiritual failure.
