The Book of Nehemiah – Lesson 10
Expository Commentary on the Book of Nehemiah
In Chapter 4 of the Book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah faced four types of opposition:
1. Mockery, Ridicule, and Insults (Nehemiah 4:2–4)
They mocked the walls Nehemiah was building, saying, “Even if a fox climbs on it, the wall will collapse.”
2. Threats and Intimidation (Nehemiah 4:7–9)
The enemies planned to wage war against the Jewish people and tried to frighten them.
3. Discouragement and Weariness
As a result, the strength of the Jews weakened, and they became discouraged.
4. Death Threats (Nehemiah 4:11)
The enemies threatened, saying, “We will kill you.”
Despite all these challenges, Nehemiah did not fear. He took wise and effective measures to protect both the temple and the walls that were being built.
He assigned half of the people for protection and the other half for construction work.
Even those who were building carried a weapon in one hand and worked with the other. (Nehemiah 4:16–17)
He also placed trumpeters nearby to give immediate warning when enemies approached.
Thus, he gave equal importance to both building and protection.
Lessons God Teaches Us Through This:
Just as it is important to build and grow the ministries we start, it is equally important to protect them.
The enemy will try to destroy our work right from the beginning.
The devil hates it when believers actively engage in God’s work, because it affects the growth of his kingdom.
Just as the ministry of leaders affects him, the ministry of committed and enthusiastic believers also causes him great loss.
Therefore:
The one who involves more believers in ministry is the best leader.
Believers must remain alert in protecting their ministry.
Key Truth:
Building a ministry and protecting it are two sides of success.
We should not stop with just starting a ministry; we must carefully guard and sustain it.
A believer should not remain inactive saying, “I have no ministry.”
Every believer must have a God-given vision, work toward it, and protect it.
This truth applies to everyone.
Final Thought:
A believer must have:
A mind to work
A heart to pray
Eyes to stay watchful
Ears to hear
And a body dedicated to ministry
A believer must have a mind to work, a heart to pray, an eye to watch, and an ear to hear God's Word.
