Bible Lesson 9.
Scripture for Meditation: 1 Chronicles 13:7–36
During the period when Eli was the high priest, the Ark of God had been captured by the Philistines. After nearly 60 years, when the Ark was finally brought back to Jerusalem and placed in the tent, the people of Israel offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord (1 Chronicles 16:1).
On that same day, David gave Asaph and his associates this first psalm of thanksgiving to offer praise to the Lord. This was a magnificent worship song—considered to be the first recorded psalm of worship.
In English, this type of psalm is called an “Enthronement Psalm.” It is a compilation of verses from three psalms—Psalm 96, 105, and 106.
This song describes the mighty acts of God and calls all nations to worship Him. It is a song of worship that invites the entire world to praise the Lord.
David does not mention his own victories in this song; rather, he glorifies the wonders and miracles of God—His judgments, covenant with Abraham, power, glory, majesty, kingdom, salvation, and protection.
Two particular verses from this song deeply moved me:
“Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth.” — 1 Chronicles 16:28, 30
These verses are a universal call to worship our Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth.
“When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it.” — 1 Chronicles 16:19
When I read these words, I am reminded how faithful our God is to His covenant.
The same God who made a covenant with Abraham continues to keep it even to this very moment. The people who went down to Egypt—just seventy in number—have been preserved by God through all generations and still stand today as an unshakable nation.
No power could destroy those whom the Lord anointed. Even though many said, “Let us wipe Israel off the map,” Israel stands firm in world history to this day.
The “few in number” people of long ago are still being protected by the Lord God. This reminds us that the God we worship is faithful to keep His covenant with us as well.
“The covenant He made with Abraham, the oath He swore to Isaac, He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant.” — 1 Chronicles 16:15
The God who made a covenant with us through baptism is powerful to keep that covenant till the very end.
So, seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually. Let us praise His grace every day. — 1 Chronicles 16:11
