Comparing Western preachers with Indian preachers is like comparing apples with oranges. The context, culture, and audience is entirely different. There are many aspects to be understood:
1. Literacy rate. The people in Western countries are more literate. The preacher could talk about concepts, ideas. For Indian context, especially in North Indian context, concepts will not be understood. You have to use many stories to communicate.
2. Book culture and Oral culture: Western world teaches school children to read books. A ten-year-old child would have read 50 books (one book about 50 pages) from school library. Many Indians may not read 50 books apart from their school text books. Quotations become boring to Indian audience, while Western audience relish it.
3. A pastor in West can spend six to eight hours in ‘Study’. He has hundreds of books and commentaries he can refer to. During the preparation hours there is no interference: phone calls or visitors or electricity cut…etc. Even congregation members expect pastors to do that.
4. Pastors are given opportunities to upgrade in the West. Their books comes from church budget. They can attend seminar to sharpen themselves and are deputed by the church. Sabbatical leave is provided for them to study and upgrade themselves.
5. Pastors in West have able assistants. John Stott had four or five Ph.D. students as his assistants. For example, he is writing a commentary on book of Acts, he will read hundreds of books on Acts, underline important quotes. The assistants would type out all the quotations. These quotations come into this writing of commentary.
6. Pastors in West do not preach 15 sermons in a week. Here pastor is expected to speak many times, that too without preparation.
