The Church Is a Bible College — That Is the Beginning of Revival.
Just for your thoughts.
The Church Is a Bible College —
That Is the Beginning of Revival.
Introduction.
Churches must not become theaters where people simply come to listen to music and songs.
A church should be a Bible college, where Scripture is taught, believers are its students, and Christ is the Head and Master Teacher.
The day a church becomes this, that day marks the beginning of revival in that church.
This concept contains a profound biblical truth. Both Scripture and history testify to it.
1. The Primary Calling of the Church — Teaching the Word
The Bible consistently presents the church as centered on the Word.
“They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers.” — Acts 2:42
Among the four pillars of the early church, the first was the apostles’ doctrine — biblical teaching.
Songs and emotional experiences were not primary. The Word was central.
“Preach the Word; be ready in season and out of season.” — 2 Timothy 4:2
Paul’s command to Timothy is clear:
The church’s foremost responsibility is to preach the Word.
2. Jesus — The Master Teacher
Jesus Christ revealed Himself as a Teacher.
“Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues…” — Matthew 4:23
When Jesus entered synagogues, He taught — He did not entertain.
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7),
The Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24–25),
John 14–17 —
All demonstrate that Jesus was a Teacher of divine truth.
“The people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority.” — Matthew 7:28–29
3. Believers — Students of the Word
“If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples.” — John 8:31
The very meaning of “disciple” is learner.
Church members are not merely attendees —
They are students growing in the Word.
“Like newborn babies, crave the pure spiritual milk of the Word, that you may grow.” — 1 Peter 2:2
The Berean believers are a beautiful example:
“They received the word with eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” — Acts 17:11
Daily study of Scripture — this is the mark of a true church student.
4. A Church Without Biblical Teaching — What Does Scripture Say?
“My people go into exile for lack of knowledge.” — Isaiah 5:13
“Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” — James 1:22
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine… they will accumulate teachers to suit their own passions.” — 2 Timothy 4:3
What do we see today?
Emotion-stirring music, attractive programs —
But little doctrinal teaching.
This is the fulfillment of 2 Timothy 4:3.
5. Revival in History — Always Rooted in the Word
(a) Revival in the Time of Ezra
“Ezra read from the Book of the Law… and the people wept when they heard the words.” — Nehemiah 8:3, 9
Ezra read Scripture for six hours.
It was not a music program — it was Scripture reading and explanation.
The Word brought conviction and tears.
This was one of Israel’s greatest revivals.
(b) Martin Luther and the Reformation (1517)
In Roman Catholic churches, the Bible was only in Latin — the people could not understand it.
Rituals and songs were present, but the Word was hidden.
Martin Luther translated the Bible into the language of the people.
When Scripture reached the people, revival swept across Europe.
“The righteous shall live by faith.” — Romans 1:17
One verse transformed Luther —
And that transformation shook a continent.
(c) John Calvin — Geneva (1536–1564)
Calvin transformed Geneva into a Bible-teaching center.
He preached daily, teaching verse by verse through Scripture.
Geneva became the spiritual center of Europe.
(d) The Welsh Revival (1904–1905)
Under Evan Roberts, revival broke out.
But before that, there had been deep foundations of Bible teaching in the churches.
Over 100,000 people turned to the Lord.
6. The Result of a Church Without Biblical Teaching
“The prophets prophesy falsely… and My people love to have it so.” — Jeremiah 5:31
In entertainment-driven churches:
People remain biblically ignorant
Emotion replaces conviction
Large crowds are mistaken for revival
The church becomes spiritually weak
7. The Mark of True Revival
“All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16–17
True revival means:
The Word pierces the conscience
The Word exposes sin
The Word produces repentance
The Word transforms lives
Conclusion
The church is not a theater — it is a Bible college.
Christ is the Master.
Believers are students.
The Bible is the curriculum.
From Ezra to Luther,
From Calvin until today —
Wherever biblical teaching is exalted, revival begins.
“The Word of our God stands forever.” — Isaiah 40:8
Where the Word is present, there is life.
Where there is life, there is revival.
